I just got home from my first day of school at Qalam! I love my teacher, he's great and seems super helpful. I'm sitting in my room with the door open, it's beautiful and sunny out. I hear birds chirping, kids playing, and cars from afar. Today was a long day but a great one. State Department employees came in from the U.S Embassy and talked to us about our stay, e.t.c. After school, I took a taxi halfway home and walked the rest of the way to clear my mind. As I'm sitting here reflecting, I came across something my friend Monica wrote about before she came to Morocco. It reminded me of my purpose of living here and experiencing the culture. Here it is:
"The inescapable connectedness of our world is truly fascinating. Over 7 billion people make up our global society. That's 7 billion different thoughts, perspectives, and stories.
I believe people can learn an unimaginable amount from the world around them. Not the world in front of them via technology, the world that surrounds each and every one of us. The world isn't always beautiful. Sorry, if that came as a shock to anyone. Cultures clash, beliefs collide. We are an intricate society, compiled from many generations. Much of the tension in our world is due to a lack of understanding. Our planet will never be perfect. But, stepping out of our comfort zone and learning, even a little bit, about those other 7 billion people is a step in the right direction."
That post took the words out of my mouth. It is truly an amazing and unexplainable feeling to experience how other people live, sleep, eat, breathe, survive, talk, love, fight, dress, and have faith.
One word for my six weeks living in Morocco: Powerful
Every hour I'm discovering something new here and seeing how other people go about their lives.
I realize how little I know about the world and how much more traveling I have to do. For now though, I'm going to completely immerse myself in the Moroccan culture and learn as much as I can about the culture.
Love this post! It truly says why you are doing this trip and how awesome it is. The world is so big and everyone should take time to immerse themselves in it and enjoy all the differences each culture offers.
